This tragedy underscores the importance of the necessary precautions one must take on the pathway from private person to public figure. There is no need to be burdened by fear, but employing practical precautions to the most realistic risk one is most likely to face will help to ensure the certainty of future safety for all involved.

As Gavin de Becker brilliantly writes in his must-read book “Gift of Fear,” (paraphrasing) “The willingness to defend oneself should always be greater than their unwillingness to offend another.”

There are several easy-to-accommodate ways to facilitate an ad-hoc “meet and greet” which both promote a favorable fan experience while ensuring a positive pocket of principal protection. Regrettably, it seems none of those options were employed in this instance.
